About Recomp
A community tracker for the people taking software apart and putting it back together.
Recomp catalogues decompilations, static recompilations, clean-room reimplementations and preservation projects across games, apps, operating systems and tools. Data comes from each project's own repository and announcements, GitHub activity is refreshed daily, and news is checked by a person before it appears.
How the labels work
- Method: matching decomp, decompilation, static recomp, clean-room, rewrite, source port, binary lift, emulation-hosted, or tool.
- Provenance: Human-led when the project says so or predates AI coding tools; AI-assisted when the authors say they used AI coding tools while directing the work; AI-generated when most of the code is described as machine-written; Not stated otherwise. We take the label from the project's own words and link the source. Projects can ask us to change it.
- Licence: from the repository's licence file.
- Needs the original: whether you must supply your own copy.
Some builds in the catalogue, including the "clean-room" entries on the Play page, were made by this site's author with AI coding agents. They are labelled AI-assisted like everything else.
What we host
The Play page frames builds published elsewhere: clean-room builds whose assets are all regenerated (each states whether it runs decompiled code or the original program code), freely licensed or freeware data, free operating systems and apps, and engines that run a file you pick from your own device without uploading it. We never host or link ROMs, disc images or ripped game assets.
Corrections & takedowns
Open an issue on GitHub. Project maintainers who want their entry changed or removed will be answered first.
